GM foils UAW as truck output starts
Article Abstract:
General Motors Corp. (GM) has taken advantage of its investments in flexible manufacturing technology as it protects its GMT-800 pickup-truck program from the United Auto Workers (UAW) strike at its Flint, Michigan plant. GM is protecting its program with the help of UAW Local 549. The company transferred important metal dies for the new trucks from its Flint facility before the strike deadline. This enabled GM to begin making the GMT-800 trucks at an Ontario plant.

General Motors walkout talks hit an impasse
Article Abstract:
Face-to-face labor negotiations between General Motors Corp. (GM) and the United Auto Workers were broken off by the top labor negotiator for the car maker. The talks were an attempt to end two strikes at GM's assembly plants in Flint, Michigan. The disappointing failure of the talks followed earlier optimism during the week of July 5-12, 1998 that the strike would be settled. Talks over local issues are expected to continue.
