General Motors and U.A.W. agree on end to strike
Article Abstract:
General Motors and the United Automobile Workers agreed to end a nearly eight week strike that shut down G.M. assembly plants across North America, put hundreds of thousands of workers into temporary unemployment and slowed the country's economic growth. The local agreement includes G.M.'s promise not to close two factories in Flint, Michigan before the year 2000. The agreement does not resolve the national issues which drove the union to strike. The issues are G.M.'s push to open new factories overseas and its effort to shrink its U.S. work force through attrition. These issues can only be changed through G.M.'s national agreement with the U.A.W., which expires in September 1999.

Strike accord makes drastic moves by G.M.'s board unlikely
Article Abstract:
General Motors' (GM) board members will have several options from which to choose from at their regularly scheduled meeting on August 3, 1998. The meeting promises to be difficult because GM's management heightened expectations in Wall Street for a major cost-reduction move. However, the car maker reached a settlement on a labor strike that will bring about closer cooperation with the United Automobile Workers. (UAW).
