GM strike spreads to communities far from Flint factories
Article Abstract:
GM has closed 26 of 29 North American assembly plants and limited production at almost 100 parts factories, laying off nearly half of its workforce, following strikes at 2 GM parts factories in Flint, MI. The national impact of the strike has been felt through the country as layoffs affect other companies, such as ITT, Harvard Industries, Autoliv ASP Inc. and Lear Corp. US unemployment claims have risen to 10.3% last week according to the Labor Dept. and the economy may slow down from an anticipated 3% to a 2.5% annual growth rate. President Clinton has said that GM and striking workers should settle the dispute without government intervention. Experts believe that the strike will slow economic growth and may cause inflation.

6,000 G.M. workers at Michigan plant join auto strike
Article Abstract:
Almost 6,000 workers at General Motors (GM) plant in Flint, Michigan went on strike as they joined other striking GM workers in a nearby plant. The strikes are part of a contentious battle that could lead to the shutdown of almost all of GM's assembly plants in North America. The auto maker had already stopped operations at seven of those plants. The company also temporarily laid off 18,600 workers due to a parts shortage from an earlier strike at a Flint metal-stamping plant.

Confrontation likely in G.M. plan to reopen plant
Article Abstract:
General Motors (GM) and the United Automobile Workers (UAW) union came closer to a confrontation in Kentucky as both sides continued to argue their case in front of an arbitrator. At issue in the arbitration is whether or not the strikes at two GM parts plants in Flint, Michigan are legal or not. GM previously said that replacement parts from other factories would be used to reopen the car maker's Chevrolet Corvette factory in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
