Environmental destruction compromises the integrity of the Western business system, and it is increasingly apparent that nature does not provide many models for sustainable development. Executives' acknowledgment of ecological limits often leads to incorporating sustainable elements into corporate strategy.

Environmental Voluntary Agreements (VAs) emerged in the 1990s to develop innovative solutions for environmental problems companies or regulators would have probably not created independently. Participating in VAs can reduce regulation, though their benefits can be outweighed by high administration and transaction costs if they are not appropriately designed .
