'Galileo' orbits Jupiter; probe arrives
Article Abstract:
The 'Galileo' entered Jupiter's orbit and inserted a probe into the planet's atmosphere on Dec 7, 1995. The spacecraft had been plagued by earlier problems with the craft's antenna and tape recorder, but most of its operations are functioning. It begins a two-year study of Jupiter.

NASA launches craft to study asteroid
Article Abstract:
NASA launched the Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR) spacecraft on Feb 17, 1996. NEAR will be in space for four years, and orbit the asteroid Eros for one of those years. It will gather information on the asteroid's size, mass, mineral composition and other data.

'Columbia' flies long science mission
Article Abstract:
The Columbia space shuttle's Oct 20-Nov 5, 1995, voyage was the second-longest mission in NASA's history. The seven crew members conducted experiments in weightlessness, physics and materials science in the microgravity lab, while circling the earth 256 times.
