Gates is defensive on U.S. antitrust action
Article Abstract:
Microsoft Chmn William H. Gates defended his company's competitive practices regarding its Windows 95 software OS. The comments followed a Justice Department petition in Federal court to prevent Microsoft from forcing PC manufacturers to bundle Microsoft's Internet browser software with Windows 95. Gates told a computer industry audience that he believed Microsoft could improve and add innovations to Windows 95's basic features, based on a 1995 consent decree with the Justice Department. Gates traced the dispute to a single sentence in the 1995 consent decree, which he said is whether the Government can decide on Microsoft-initiated innovations. The Government contends that Microsoft is unfairly capitalizing on its OS dominance, as more than 90% of American PCs are powered by Windows 95. Senate Judiciary Committee Chmn. Orrin G. Hatch, R-UT, said he would hold a Nov 1997 hearing to examine 'anticompetitive practices in the software industry.'

Small software company nears pact with Motorola; Be Inc. operating system for Mac clones
Article Abstract:
Be Inc and Motorola plan to announce a licensing agreement to use Be's operating system in Motorola's Macintosh-compatible computers. Be has already made agreements with other Mac clone makers and is working on a licensing agreement with IBM. The agreements with IBM and Motorola are important because they are partners with Macintosh for the development and production of the Power PC chips used in Macintosh computers. Be's operating system is designed for programmers and computer users that are technically literate. Strong applications such as audio and video processing or component oriented, object based software are more 'multithreaded' than Apple's Next designs or even Microsoft's Windows NT. A new and important program being added to Be's operating system is Virtual Mac by Fredlabs.

Intel agreement indicates a rift with Microsoft
Article Abstract:
A new licensing agreement between Intel and Real Networks also represents a growing weakness in the Wintel dupopoly between Intel and Microsoft. Intel will share its advanced video compression software, which compacts data into a smaller file for faster and more efficient Internet transmission, with Microsoft competitor Real Networks' Realvideo GE multimedia software. Real Networks claims that approximately 30 million customers use its software to receive audio and video over the Internet. Seattle-based Real Networks is believed to hold a wide advantage over Microsoft, which developed a rival Netshow technology as well as invested tens of millions of dollars to obtain an equity stake in Real Networks. Realvideo GE, the latest Real Networks multimedia offering, is currently in testing.
