Getting to know the ABCs of the WWW to dazzle friends
Article Abstract:
The Internet's World Wide Web (WWW) has become the most visible and talked-about about area of the technology arena, but many people do not know what the Web is designed to do, nor how to access it. The Web is the graphical section of the Internet, which is a loosely connected network of computers. The Internet includes massive databases of information from companies, governments, libraries and universities. The Web provides 'hyperlinks,' which are easy-to-use, graphics-based hot-spots in a Web page that allow users to quickly jump to another Web page by clicking on the spot with a mouse. The jump could connect to another computer located in another country. Apple's Web address at http://www.apple.com is a typical address. Http designates the communications protocol. Apple indicates a massive computer run by Apple, and .com signifies a commercial site. Government sites have the suffix .gov, while universities have the suffix .edu.

Article Abstract:
The Internet has spawned an array of partnerships and alliances that are creating a new industry structure that is expected to transform current on-line services into mass-market products. On-line providers typically provide software, content or Internet access. At this point, most companies are focussing on their specific strengths, rather than all three areas. For example, America Online is a leading content provider. The company has enhanced its content offerings with plans to use Internet browsers from both Microsoft and Netscape Communications. Microsoft hopes to excel in all three areas, but has recently limited its content efforts. Netscape has focused on software and expects the America Online alliance to improve its market presence.
