The market for individually managed accounts is slow to take off, despite the entry of some of the large groups into the sector. Promoters of individually managed accounts claim this arrangement has several advantages but there are plenty of skeptics in the wealth management industry who argue that the service offered through an individually managed accounts is no different from what full service stockbrokers and boutique financial planners have done for years.

Mergers aplenty

Australia's mergers and acquisitions (M&A) market activity was dominated by international deals in the first half of 2003, making a strong recovery after the reversals of 2002. Thomson Financial, a finance research industry group, reports that M&A deals worth 13.5 billion dollars were announced in the March quarter of 2003 and deals worth 37 billion dollars were announced in the June quarter of 2003.

The bankruptcy law is misused by the declared insolvents to escape from paying the taxes and the creditors. The law is being amended to give trustees more power, even to take back bulk amounts invested in pension funds just before bankruptcy declaration.
