Australia has invested heavily in science and research, but has failed to derive economic benefits from making research into commercial reality. It is now time for the government to lift the barriers to commercialization. This will involve new tax legislation to attract private equity investors.

Great idea, shameful return: co-operative research centres have had some spectacular successes, but they have come at a high price

Australia's co-operative research centres (CRCs) have received investment of A$7.2 billion. This has led to some outstanding science and a few strong commercial successes. However, CRCs have generally shown poor understanding of commercial innovation techniques and of how to obtain early-stage venture capital.

Issues are presented concerning the initiative which has been launched by the government to promote industrial innovation. The use of venture-capital fairs, exchange visits to the US and improved links between science and industry are discussed.
