Growing threat of cyberthieves in the intellectual marketplace
Article Abstract:
Many artists, policy makers and legal experts are alarmed at the growth of computer-aided pirating of copyrighted music, films, computer software and other intellectual property. Computers are being used to copy paintings, photographs, video and music for manipulation into 'new' works, which are sold abroad in countries including China. While many would like to see a solution, experts claim a borderless, unpoliced access to information is bound by few rules. Computer technology is opening up new channels for information dispersal and technology is far ahead of law. More than 100 arts and humanities technology leaders gathered at the Museum of Television and Radio for a conference on the impact of new technologies and intellectual property rights to examine the issues.

Board is expected to ban student use of laser pointers
Article Abstract:
The New York City Board of Education is expected to ban students from using hand-held laser pointers. These pointers have replaced the more common wooden and metal pointers. Laser pointers have entered into classrooms and have been showing up on people's clothing, theatre screens, and some blackboards around the US. Physicians say that the pointers can cause retina damage if the laser is aimed directly on the eye for more than a few seconds.
