The hand-held computer market has been hurt by the economic slowdown and by competition from other high-tech devices like cellphones. In response, makers like Palm, Handspring, Hewlett-Packard and Sony have drastically reduced prices on some personal digital assistants, smart phones and hand-held data devices. The industry has high hopes for the next generation of hand-helds, which will probably feature wireless and voice communications capabilities.

IBM may be due to face its most daunting competitor yet, if and when the Hewlett-Packard/Compaq merger is approved and completed. It will be the first time another company will equal Big Blue in size, revenue, products and services. One difference, though, is IBM's focus on business computers rather than retail. All the others, such as Sun, Dell, Gateway, now need to plan their strategies in a changing world of competition and consolidation.

Handspring plans line of hybrid devices

Handspring Inc. announced the development of a new line of wireless devices, to be known as Treo, that will combine the features of a personal digital assistant and a smart phone. The firm plans to have the product to market in early 2002. The models will run on the Palm operating system. Analysts see possible difficulties, saying that the transition by wireless carriers to next-generation networks may delay new wireless products, and that consumers may be distracted by an overload of competing devices.
