The (NAB) faces the problem of raising two billion dollars of fresh capital, which is required as per the (APRA's) stipulation for countering the problems caused due to the bank's irregular currency-options trading. APRA wants the bank to use their standard model for risk management, which is termed as a blunt instrument by the analysts and the changes are expected to hurt the bank financially.

Paul Batchelor, the newly appointed chief executive designate of AMP Ltd., will face some tough challenges when he takes over from George Trumbull in 1999. Batchelor's main task will be managing the 57% stake of insurance company GIO Australia. Batchelor and AMP are pursuing an alliance, rather than a full ownership, strategy. Batchelor also plans to focus on AMP's implementation and communications strategy, as well as on cutting costs in its British businesses.
