Hewlett lobbies for its encryption plan that would satisfy tough export rules
Article Abstract:
HP is lobbying the federal government to adopt a unique hardware-based encryption scheme that would allow it to export encryption technology to foreign customers. The federal government currently has strict rules prohibiting the exporting of encryption technology because it fears that terrorists and criminals will use the technology to evade law-enforcement and intelligence agencies' investigations. Technology companies contend that encryption technology is essential for producing securing electronic commerce systems. The HP plan would include two hardware components. The first component is a microprocessor-based encryption engine that would be added to all PCs. The encryption engines would be useless without an additional policy card, which would contain the encryption codes. The government could regulate what level of encryption code went to whom. This would allow PC makers to export the machines without receiving special export licenses.
