Hi-Tech: Hard Choices
Article Abstract:
Although still in its early stages, the interfacing of modern telephone systems with computers has produced extraordinary tools for telecommunications. When a set of standards for equipment has been established by the communications and computer industries, truly integrated systems will become available. Small companies with as few as a dozen telephones now have access to the same versatile systems as large businesses. The two basic types of business telephone systems are: Key and private branch exchange (PBX). A modem allows a computer to talk to a computer over telephone lines. A variety of switching systems is available from manufacturers. Intercom systems may be incorporated into a telephone system or remain separate. A glossary of Teletalk terms is included. A table shows the ten 1983 PBX market leaders. A photograph shows a private automatic branch exchange (PAXB) in use.
