Bilateral protectionism: lessons from a cause celebre
Article Abstract:
Bilateral protectionism is the curious form of trade relations that Canada and the United States, the two largest trading partners in the world, have developed over the years. This article analyzes one celebrated trade friction between the two countries. It reviews its development and examines its political underpinnings. The reconstitution of the main actors' motivations and strategies reveals the inner workings of the American trade protection apparatus and demonstrates its potential for abuse and self-reinforcement. This article also explores the ideological differences between the two countries' perspectives on trade and the questionable benefits of their mutual brand of protectionism. The 1999 PRISM Pacific Rim Leadership Summit - management in China after two decades of an open door policy
Article Abstract:
The implementation of an open door policy in China proved instrumental in promoting industrial growth, particularly among multinational corporations (MNCs). Despite the difficulties posed by the country's culture and federal policies, a significant number of MNCs have been able to expand their manufacturing bases and profit margins. By maintaining a strong corporate identity and adopting a strategic approach to business development, MNCs have been successful in raising the quality of products and services they offer, while addressing their local and international needs.
