Home banking gets another chance; banks hook up to videotex to reach users

Home banking has returned to the marketplace, with companies such as IBM and Sears, Roebuck & Co using Prodigy, a user-friendly service geared for mass marketing. Prodigy, U.S. Videotel Inc, and similar services will provide at-home banking, as well as information, entertainment and various services. Previously, some have said the market was not ready for home-banking, but in 1989, 15 financial institutions including such large and established banks as Wells Fargo & Co have bought the right to bank through Prodigy. This is a low-risk proposition for the banks because marketing efforts are handled by the videotex operators.

End of free E-mail rankles Prodigy users

Prodigy's videotext service, a joint venture of IBM and Sears Roebuck, is now charging for sending electronic mail. Prodigy has, in consequence received thousands of complaints from users who say that Prodigy lured them into a reliance on E-mail. Some users are writing to Prodigy's advertisers, hoping to pressure Prodigy to drop charges. Prodigy says it needs charges for the service because E-mail is growing at 20 percent a month, forcing Prodigy to increase capacity. Prodigy says the charges will be small. Prodigy also says that a 'very small' group appears to be behind the campaign.

Prodigy service in Northeast to be delivered by Nynex

Prodigy Services Co, an on-line electronic information service, is transferring its data storage facilities to Nynex Corp in the Northeast, and is developing similar business deals with other telephone companies nationally. Prodigy, a joint venture between IBM and Sears, Roebuck and Co, will be able to reduce costly capital expenditures that come with building and maintaining computer networks. The company will be able to focus on marketing and distribution. Prodigy also feels that phone companies are better equipped and have more experience running a network.
