Homey PC program lets family gather to write their stories
Article Abstract:
Delrina Corp's $49 Echo Lake family history software offers an easy-to-understand socialized interface and convenient features such as family photo importation, but it includes a few minor design flaws. Echo Lake is designed to allow family members to record personal and family histories. Its social interface is designed around a family cabin metaphor. The cabin has a desk, shelves to hold individual books and a wall safe to keep certain documents private. The cabin also features a picture of a cup of coffee that cuts to a beautiful image of a mountain lake as seen though a cabin window. Individual histories are recorded as books, which sit on the bookshelf. New books are started by clicking a hand crank next to the desk, while established books are viewed simply by clicking on the book. The program includes a well-designed word processor. Poor aspects include the absence of a manual.

For people who use multiple PCs, here's help staying in sync
Article Abstract:
'File-synchronization software' is an emerging class of products aimed at keeping data on multiple microcomputers updated. The software can be a big help to users who work on several machines. The best synchronization package is MBS Technologies' $70 FileRunner. Versions are available for the Apple Macintosh and MS-DOS, with a Microsoft Windows version under development. A user simply tells FileRunner which disks, files and directories in which machines to keep updated. FileRunner will automatically copy the selected files to a floppy disk; when the floppy is inserted in another computer, the program will automatically update the relevant files there. The automatic updates work in both directions. FileRunner adjusts for various time zones, so it knows that a file updated at noon in California is more recent than a file updated at 10 a.m. in Florida.

PC program lets machines help bosses manage people
Article Abstract:
Avantos Performance Systems Inc's $245 ManagePro is Microsoft Windows-compatible software that helps managers oversee employees' development, identify problems early, prepare for performance reviews, and plan for raises and other incentives. The program measures an employee's progress against company-wide and individual goals. It has two main modules: a goal-planning module views objectives from the viewpoint of the company or department, and a people-planning module takes a personnel angle. ManagePro has a built-in 'adviser,' which provides people-management tips and strategies. ManagePro is highly recommended. A version of ManagePro for Apple's Macintosh is expected in spring 1993.
