House passes '97 authorization funds
Article Abstract:
Congress passed a defense authorization bill totaling $266.7 billion for the 1997 fiscal year. The bill is $12.4 billion over what president Clinton had requested and marks a 1.5% increase from 1996. The majority of the increase will go towards development programs and weapons procurement.

House passes assault weapons ban repeal
Article Abstract:
The House approved a measure by a vote of 239-173 on Mar 22, 1996, that would repeal the ban on assault weapons. The measure was supported mostly by Republicans, who promised the repeal in 1995, despite opposition to such action by the public. Pres Clinton would veto any repeal measure.
