Pres Clinton urged Myanmar's ruling military government to free dissident Aung San Suu Kyi. Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been under house arrest since 1989, won the May 1990 election, but was prevented from taking power. Several Nobel prize winners met with Clinton on this issue.

Premier replaced in banking scandal

The Lithuanian Parliament voted to dismiss Slezevicius on Feb 8, 1996, after it was revealed that the premier had withdrawn $30,000 from Innovation Bank just before its assets were frozen amid a bank fraud scandal. Mindaugas Stankevicius was selected as the new premier.
