'How do i realistically evaluate my chances?' (landing a job)_ (Managing your Career)
Article Abstract:
Job applicants should try to overcome any negative feelings they may have after being turned down for jobs, and should try to turn rejection into their own advantage. Candidates who do not get the jobs they were applying for should try to establish and maintain contact with the firms that turned them down. A good first step would be by writing a well-planned letter to the people who conducted the recruitment interviews so that the applicants could convey their appreciation for the consideration they received, their continued interest in working for the firm, and their interest to keep in touch. These people may be able to help rejected applicants find other jobs within their company or with other firms. Job seekers need to be realistic, but they should also have a positive and hopeful attitude.

Should I make it 'personal and confidential'?
Article Abstract:
Job seekers should not mark resumes, letter of inquiry or job applications 'personal and confidential' when mailing them to prospective employers, since this is less than honest and could give the prospective employer a bad first impression. Only after prospective employers have informed the applicant of their failure to receive correspondence should the applicant mark the mailing 'personal and confidential'. Applicants who are being seriously considered for an opening should use certified mail or a courier service when a prospective employer requests additional information.

'How do I present myself after being laid off twice.' (Managing Your Career) (Column)
Article Abstract:
Career guidance is offered to a management accountant who has been twice laid off in the span of three years. The accountant concerned is advised to seek out professional activities such as volunteer work for nonprofit organizations and temporary professional work outside his specialization. Such activities are recommended as they help widen the network of business contacts that could eventually lead to a new job. The need to maintain and project a positive self-image to prospective employers is also emphasized.
