How the Media Would Set Your Priorities
Article Abstract:
An Opinion Research Corporation (ORC) poll of journalists revealed their attitudes, opinions, and perceptions of the business community. While most businessmen would probably rate an adequate profit to be of prime importance, the journalists ranked job safety and curbing pollution as what they thought should be the most important considerations of business. The media overwhelmingly agreed that large companies are vital to the nation's growth. Additional findings indicated small business should have a greater influence over government decisions, and almost half of those polled indicated big business should have less governmental influence than it presently enjoys. Most of the journalists included in the poll are specialists in business and financial news.

Article Abstract:
Some indications in mid-1982 indicate that the recession has bottomed-out and that the next two quarters will see an upswing, albeit very slow. Consumer spending should lead us out of the recession, but people need confidence in the economy before they spend. High interest rates and a huge federal deficit are impediments toward that confidence. Federal Reserve Chairman, Paul Volcker, says he is dedicated to controlling inflation, but fears persist that he will have to loosen controls so that the government can pay its bills. If that is the case, we would be back to inflation again.
