IBM escalates its legal battle with Comdisco
Article Abstract:
IBM sues Comdisco Inc over memory circuit boards it leased to the company, which were reconfigured and do not work properly. In its second lawsuit against the Comdisco, IBM charges in federal court that the modified computers are falsely marketed to consumers as containing only IBM parts. IBM says Comdisco modified 2-Mbyte circuit boards into 4-Mbyte boards and sold them with IBM labels. IBM has found 100 boards in four mainframes that have failed. Comdisco acknowledges buying and reconfiguring the boards as IBM asserts, but only in a few machines. Comdisco says it stopped the practice after six months when IBM objected, so the suit is unwarranted. The suit is part of IBM's attempt to reassert itself in the $24 billion computer leasing industry. If the court restricts customers' flexibility in taking apart mainframes and using parts as they choose, IBM will be positioned to control the market.

Oki subsidiary to lower price of laser printer
Article Abstract:
Okidata, a US subsidiary of Oki Electric of Japan, cuts the price of its four-page-per-minute laser printer to less than $1,000. It means the printer could retail for as little as $650. Few other laser printers are selling for less than $1,000, which makes this pricing seem very aggressive. Okidata will also cut prices on its eight-page-per-minute printers by 15 percent to 30 percent, which means Okidata's products will sell for prices that are comparable to competitors' prices for four-page-per-minute machines. Okidata can be this aggressive on prices partly because the company has its on engines. Other companies have to buy components from Ricoh or Canon.
