IBM is getting off to a quick start in pen-based PCs
Article Abstract:
IBM Corp is introducing a pen-based personal computer that uses Go Corp's operating system, providing IBM with an early entry into what is believed will be a major computer market. The product may be delayed by some contractual details, but the release date is set for Apr 16, 1992. Other companies have pen-based systems on the market or in development, but IBM's timely release is an improvement over its generally acknowledged sluggishness in releasing new microcomputers and products. The difference between IBM's portable computer and other pen-based entries is its sturdiness and temperature-change resistance. IBM's marketing focus will be on customers who need computers in the field. Pricing for the system will depend upon the amount and kind of software the customer wants. IBM's announcement counters Microsoft Corp's Windows for Pens software, which is supported by 200 hardware and software vendors. Go Corp is planning an assortment of support products for IBM to counter Microsoft's marketing edge.

IBM shares seem to exit a yearlong slump on improving prospects for new mainframes
Article Abstract:
IBM skillfully manages a transition to its new line of mainframe computers and analysts see the computer maker's share moving beyond the $100 to $110 range, which it has been in for much of 1990. Some analysts worry about IBM stock and point to the economic slump the worldwide computer industry is experiencing. IBM has been successful in marketing its mainframe computers on the merit of its future potential versus its current shortcomings. Some investors who are bullish on IBM note that the computer maker is doing so well in other areas of its business that it will be profitable even if mainframe computer sales slump.
