IBM to start announcing its fall line
Article Abstract:
IBM's line of computers for fall 1991 is expected to enhance its position in the minicomputer and mainframe markets and, consequently, improve on a generally depressed financial performance. The products to be announced include an AS/400 minicomputer that will cost 25 percent less than the current $15,000 model; mainframes consisting of one, two or three central processors; disk drives that can store some 33Gbytes and a low-cost RS/6000 workstation. The new AS/400 is intended to penetrate the fast-growing server market as well as to convince companies still using the System 36 to upgrade. A number of service options will be made available to minicomputer users wishing to set up servers. IBM's new mainframes will go with the four-, five- and six-processor new generation machines. A less powerful series that is air-cooled, rather than water-cooled, will have new three- and four-processor machines to go with the previously-announced one- and two-processor mainframes. Mainframes are traditionally IBM's main income earner; despite the slow mainframe market, analysts are projecting that the company can sell 300 or more units, each costing about $25 million.

IBM announces minicomputer line with more power
Article Abstract:
IBM introduces new, more powerful versions of its AS/400 minicomputers and expects revenue from this line to be in the high single-digits for 1992. The new E models offer about 30 percent more performance than the previous D models. One model will contain three processors, boosting performance by 70 percent over earlier high-end units. IBM's share of the midrange computer market reached 18 percent in 1991, up form 10.5 percent in 1987. In 1991 the AS/400 line generated $14 billion in revenue, 22 percent of the company's total revenue. IBM is also cutting prices by ten percent when the minicomputers are sold with peripheral devices and software. The high-end machine uses 16-megabit memory chips. IBM announced the new product line only ten months after the last line of AS/400 minicomputers had been introduced, speeding up the product cycle.

IBM to unveil some models of AS/400 line
Article Abstract:
IBM will introduce models in the middle of its AS/400 minicomputer line to encourage customers to upgrade from the IBM System 36. The company will also announce a new release of its operating system software that will make it easier to move software from the System 36 to the AS/400, as well as make it easier for non-technical users to run the equipment. The announcements will serve as a promotional strategy for the AS/400, a product line that has been successful, but whose sales to System 36 users and others have fallen short of expectations. Analysts say that System 36 sales are slow because users do not need any more power, and that moving their software to AS/400 can be difficult. Sales at the high end of the AS/400 line have exceeded analysts' expectations.
