IBM to unveil 3 new models for its PC line

IBM will introduce three microcomputers that target the middle of the PS/2 product line. All three use the Intel 80386SX microprocessor. Two of them - the Model 35 and the Model 40 - do not use 'Microchannel' design, relying instead on an earlier design implemented in its older PCs and entry-level PS/2s. IBM has promoted Microchannel for several years, but customers have resisted it. The Model 40 is notable for including space for extra circuit boards, which customers want because they link their computers to all manner of other electronic devices. The Model 40 will probably cost about $3,000, which is expensive. The Model 57 SX - IBM's third new product - comes with a large hard-disk drive and uses Microchannel design. It will cost about $4,000. The middle area of the PS/2 line, which includes products such as these, is IBM's best chance to reverse its decline of market share in the microcomputer market.

IBM introduces its revamped PC line featuring reasonably priced notebook
Article Abstract:
IBM's new line of ThinkPad portable computers includes the $4,000 ThinkPad 700C, a notebook computer with an active-matrix liquid crystal display color screen, which produces intense colors. The company also introduced a monochrome notebook computer called a notepad that uses a stylus resembling a pen for inputting data. Notepad microcomputers have been available in 1992 by special bid only. Active matrix monitors have been manufactured primarily in Japan by companies such as Sharp Corp and Toshiba Corp. IBM has been able to take advantage of this technology, which is still expensive, because it is part of a joint venture with Toshiba. IBM is attempting to take the lead in the market for portable computers with color monitors. The company also made the European introduction of its low-cost microcomputers, the PS/ValuePoint, which cost $1,600 to $2,850 in Europe. Other information on IBM is presented.

IBM introduces its $12,990 PS/2 70 486 microcomputer, the second IBM machine based on Intel's 80486 microprocessor. The PS/2 70 486 is aimed at first time IBM customers and has the same features and price as the 486-enhanced PS/2 70-A21. The enhancement, called the Power Platform, allows current PS/2 users to safeguard their investment while upgrading to the greater computing power of a 486 machine. IBM also announces a contract with Soft-Switch Inc that will provide communications software capable of exchanging electronic mail and documents between IBM's OfficeVision system and other vendors' office systems.
