IBM unveils additions to top-line PCs, rounding out plans for network market
Article Abstract:
IBM's $14,145 PS/2 95 file server is based on Intel Corp's 80486 microprocessor and comes with a whole range of storage options that add up to around 9Gbytes of memory. The new file server comes with a slimmed-down version of the OS/2 operating system, which is the software that allows the computer to perform functions. IBM's new file server will present some competition for Compaq Computer Corp's $20,999 Systempro but a spokesperson for Compaq maintains that the Compaq machine is a far more sophisticated product. Analysts say that the announcement by IBM is a long-awaited addition to a line of IBM computers and represents the computer maker's dedication to networking and the microcomputer industry. IBM also debuted the 486-based PS/2 90, base-priced at $12,495.

Digital plans to unveil computer
Article Abstract:
Digital Equipment Corp (DEC) introduces applicationDEC, which is based on Intel's 80486 microprocessor. The new computer, which uses a version of Unix, will incorporate as many as six 486 processors, with a single processor version running at 20 million instructions per second (MIPS). Thus, a system with six processors could theoretically run at 120 MIPS. A 16-user system will cost $22,885. At least one industry observer calls applicationDEC a 'beautiful product' with pricing that is 'extremely aggressive.'
