Three Mile Island: Cleaned up, and for sale
Article Abstract:
GPU Inc. (Parsippany, NJ) is trying to sell its Three Mile Island nuclear power-generating plant as the country moves toward an unregulated electricity market. The plant's Unit 1, which was not involved in the 1979 nuclear accident, has been up for sale at a reported value of $600 million since December 1997. GPU also is attempting to sell its Oyster Creek nuclear plant (Forked River, NJ) in the same deal. Peco Energy Co. (Philadelphia, PA), according to industry analysts, is the most likely buyer. GPU's decision to sell its plants, which must be approved by state officials and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, came after passage of a new Pennsylvania law ending a guaranteed rate structure.
