The nature of industry forces and ways to develop strategies for profit maximisation are discussed. The forces of industry structure include entry of competitors, threat of substitutes, bargaining power of buyers and suppliers, and competitor rivalry. These forces decide price, cost and required investment, and are the biggest determinant of how much profit a business can earn.

Customer value is created either by lowering customer cost or increasing buyer performance, and since small businesses donEt have the economies of scale to wage a price war, differentiation is their best bet. Ways of differentiating a product from its competitors and creating customer value are discussed.
