Information systems planning: a model and empirical tests
Article Abstract:
A model based on agency theory and transaction-cost economics is developed to explain why information systems (IS) planning practices vary across organizations. Research literature on IS reveals that companies differ with respect to the amount of time they spend on IS planning, the planning methodologies they use, the focus of their IS plans, the implementation of these plans, and the linkage between IS plans and corporate plans. The model is tested using data generated by a survey of IS practices in Australian companies. The findings provide useful insights on such issues as the dependence of senior managers on the IS manager, their level of control over the planning process, the IS plan's incorporation of senior management's goals and objectives, and senior executives' views on the usefulness of the IS plan as a tool for bonding, monitoring and governance.

Robust capacity planning under uncertainty
Article Abstract:
How effectively industries deal with future market conditions is largely dependent on their capacity expansion planning. However, existing capacity expansion models do not consider uncertainties that can arise from errors in specifications, statistical calculation of relationships, and other variables. This is quite unfortunate because these uncertainties influence business enterprises in their decisions regarding investment, production, and pricing. This article proposes a robust or sensitivity approach to capacity planning that addresses these uncertainties. Caution is the main element of this approach.
