Informix revamps database technology; firm takes novel approach to handling multimedia
Article Abstract:
Informix will introduce its Universal Server database management software, which incorporates relational databases with object-oriented technology. Informix's 'object-relational' approach allows other companies to produce software components that plug into the central database. The technology facilitates the use of multimedia features on the Internet. Informix recently purchased Illustra Information Technologies to acquire the new database technology, with which it hopes to overtake its rival, Oracle, in the database market. To compete with Informix's advances, Oracle used the name 'Universal Server' for its own database product. After a legal battle, both companies have been allowed to use the name. While some analysts are not optimistic about the market's enthusiasm for object-relational databases, others note that the delay in Oracle's release of Oracle8 may undermine its competitiveness.

Software makers are likely to report generally strong earnings for quarter
Article Abstract:
Microsoft is expected to announce $450 million net income on $1.9 billion in revenue for 3rd qtr 1995. The 42% increase is largely attributable to the company's Aug 24, 1995 release of Windows 95, but Microsoft plans to spread the operating system's initial earnings across several quarters. Symantec used Windows 95-related utilities to boost its net income 65% to $13 million on total revenue of $100 million in the same period. Informix's continued growth in the database software market accounts for its $25 million net income, a 51% increase, on $178 million in revenue for 3rd qtr 1995. Computer Associates' aggressive client/server network marketing leads analysts to project a 3rd qtr profit of $151 million, but that excludes the company's one-time net charge for its acquisition of Legent Corp. Novell posts $105 million net on $543 million in revenue, despite difficulties with WordPerfect.
