British Prime Minister John Major attempted to heal the divisions within his Conservative Party by welcoming back suspended members of the dissident faction known as Euroskeptics. The Euroskeptics responded on Jan 19, 1995, with a manifesto reiterating their opposition to European integration.

Major set back on Maastricht social pact

The UK government accepted an amendment to legislation on the ratification of the Maastricht Treaty on May 5, 1993. The amendment, proposed by the Labor and Liberal Democratic Parties, eliminated references to the Social Chapter.
