Digital flies big patent suit against Intel; Pentium line is targeted by aggressive action; move jolts stock prices
Article Abstract:
DEC has filed a lawsuit against Intel, claiming that the company has built its Pentium microprocessor line with patented technology that it stole from DEC. DEC is demanding monetary damages of an unspecified amount and a guarantee that Intel will stop production on its Pentium line. The lawsuit has affected the stock value of both the companies. On the New York Stock Exchange DEC's stocks rose $2.25 a share to close at $35.375. And on the Nasdaq Stock Market, Intel's stock dropped by $6.75 a share, closing at $152.375. Intel has also had a suit filed against them from Cyrix, who claims the company's Pentium Pro and Pentium II chips infringe on two Cyrix patents. Some analysts believe DEC's lawsuit is an act of weakness, based on the unpopularity of its Alpha microprocessor.

It is an excellent solution for video and other large streams of data that must be moved at a high speed. K6 is Advanced Micro Devices' processor chip; its function capabilities are compatible to Intel's Pentium II processor and it is priced less. Celeron is Intel's version of a stripped-down Pentium II chip and is priced compatibly with AMD's K6.
