The inability of electronic banking services to provide error-free payment of their customer's utility bills is leading many to withdraw support for the emerging payment methodology until better service is assured. Despite the encouragement of personal-finance software vendors and banking institutions alike, only about two million consumer's utilize on-line banking services. Merchants are not anxious to invest in the necessary on-line architecture unless they are assured that a certain number of their customers will use the service, and consumers desire the same assurance regarding the number of participating merchants. Intuit's electronic payment service, offered to users of its Quicken financial software, actually uses paper cheques for the disbursement of most of its customers' payments, sending them in bulk via overnight mail services.

Computer Associates to buy Cheyenne; pact for $1.2 billion comes half year after target spurned McAfee's offer
Article Abstract:
Computer Associates International (CA) is acquiring Cheyenne Software for $1.2 billion in cash, or $30.50 per share. The Oct 1996 deal occurs six months after Cheyenne staved off a hostile takeover attempt by McAfee Associates, which offered $27.50 per share. Cheyenne's stock price rose 34%, closing at $30.078, on the news of the purchase. Cheyenne markets antivirus and backup software, which should complement CA's product line and improve its ability to serve the corporate network market. CA, which is attempting to dominate the software market through acquisitions, has been quick to point out that the product lines of the companies have very little overlap and should not raise antitrust concerns. Cheyenne will become a CA division under the agreement and will be managed by current Chmn and CEO ReiJane Huai.

Software lets marketers target Web ads

Web marketers are preparing to send advertisements that are as personal as some of the junk mail being sent on the Internet. By accessing the same storehouses of consumer data that is being used by junk mailers, Web marketers may now be able to solve one of their biggest problems: figuring out who users are. Intelligent Interactions's Adfinity is a software package that utilizes existing consumer databases to determine which ads should be sent to specific Net surfers, based on age, income and other personal information. There are many issues that both consumers and companies are concerned about in relation to Adfinity and other programs like it, such as security and whether users will respond well to junk mail advertising.
