Intel is slashing prices by 58% on some chips
Article Abstract:
Intel Corp is cutting the price of its 80486SX microprocessors a drastic 58 percent effective Jul 1, 1992, giving it a price of $119 each in lots of 1,000 down from $282. Intel, which was expected to cut its prices, though not so sharply, already reduced the price of the 80486SX from $319 on Apr 1, 1992. Intel's move counters increasing competition from semiconductor manufacturers, such as Advanced Micro Devices Inc and Cyrix Corp, although they are expected to cut their prices as well. Neither company confirms price changes, however. Texas Instruments Inc is anticipated to join in the competition against Intel's microprocessor market share. Intel's price cuts will likely encourage consumers to buy microcomputers made with the 80486SX chips rather than slower machines with rivals' clone chips.

Staffs of Applied Materials, AMD being reduced
Article Abstract:
Advanced Micro Devices Inc and Applied Materials Inc announce layoffs in Nov 1990 because a worsening economy causes a decrease in demand. Advanced Micro dismisses 200 workers effective Dec 30, 1990, and plans to make more cuts in 1991; the semiconductor chip maker expects to return to profit in the 2nd qtr of 1991. The layoffs and Advanced Micro represents about two percent of its worldwide work force while the 250 to 300 job layoffs that Advanced Materials announces represents between seven and nine percent of its workforce. Rising costs are pinching earnings at Advanced Materials, and the company is freezing pay raises and cutting 10 percent of executives' salaries to make up for losses.

Intel Corp.'s patent-infringement claim against Cyrix is thrown out in Texas
Article Abstract:
A Texas District Judge threw out Intel Corp's patent infringement court case against Cyrix. Intel had charged that Cyrix's coprocessor chip duplicated the functions of a patent that Intel has had since 1982. The Judge ruled that Cyrix was not liable because the company that built the chip, SGS Thomson, was licensed to use Intel's patents. Intel has a second suit against Cyrix involving the legality of the production of the 80486 chip. Some analysts believe the initial report from Texas indicates that Cyrix has a good chance of winning the 486 battle. Intel will aggressively push for compensation against Cyrix and against Chips & Technologies.
