Tandy plans to launch discount stores
Article Abstract:
Tandy Corp is planning to change its current retailing strategy and open six large discount stores that will sell computers direct to the public. The Tandy move emphasizes the current change in computer retailing, and the trend towards computer superstores and mass market products. Analysts believe that consumers are becoming more knowledgeable about computers and therefore are not so in need of the traditional specialty computer store that offers personal expertise but higher prices. What consumers are now seeking, argue some analysts, are retail outlets offering large selections of personal computers at low cost. Other retailers such as Intelligent Electronics Inc and Computerland Corp have already indicated they intend to follow suit and open discount computer stores in the near future.

Compaq to classify certain retailers as specialists for its complex machines
Article Abstract:
Compaq Computer is expected to announce a special classification of computer dealer, in an attempt to address customer complaints that the average computer dealer is unable to cope with the company's increasingly complex product line. In addition, they are also expected to begin charging customers for services that dealerships used to offer for free. As many as two hundred of its 2,000 North American dealers are to be classified as highly trained experts. These dealers will install and maintain the SystemPro file server product line, along with complex networking software and other products. Although all dealers will continue to stock the complete range of Compaq products, it is expected that only about 20 percent to 30 percent of them will qualify for the new classification.
