Intel may face clone of its chip by competitor: Texas Instruments is said to seek similar circuits by Chips & Technologies
Article Abstract:
Texas Instruments Inc (TI) and Chips & Technologies are negotiating a contract that would allow TI to use Chips & Technologies' integrated circuits, which are clones of the popular Intel 386 microprocessor. Intel Corp is already experiencing a loss of market share due to Advanced Micro Devices' microprocessor clone, a product that is also forcing Intel to reduce its prices. Cyrix Corp and several companies in Asia are developing microprocessor clones that will compete with Intel's 386 chip. TI hopes to develop a chip that combines standard microprocessor cores with a variety of additional circuits custom-made for specific tasks. TI could become a major contender in the market if the negotiations with Chips & Technologies succeeds because TI already has proven expertise in circuits. TI's contract would also bolster Chips & Technologies' legal standing because TI has a large patent portfolio and legal power.

Texas Instruments Inc. is intervening in case of Intel vs. Chips & Technologies
Article Abstract:
Texas Instruments Inc has aligned itself with Chips and Technologies Inc (C&T) in the lawsuit brought by Intel Corp against C&T charging patent infringement. A federal judge has decided that Texas Instruments (TI) may join the legal fray and simultaneously denied a request by Intel that would have restrained Chips & Technologies from transferring the technologies involved with clones of Intel's chips. Intel controlled the market for integrated circuits for years until companies began developing clones of the Intel chips. Chips & Technologies claims it has reverse-engineered chips as part of a $50 million three-year process. TI has an agreement with Chips & Technologies, allowing TI to manufacture chips with Chips & Technologies' technology. TI may have been selected as a partner for its legal strength.
