Intel's delivery of new 'flash' chips delayed
Article Abstract:
Intel Corp has told customers that it will not ship a new family of flash memory chips before Dec 1993 at the earliest. Intel currently dominates the market for flash chips, which store data without drawing power and can be erased and reprogrammed much more quickly than other types of memory chips. The problem is that NMB Semiconductor Co of Japan, a key supplier of the new family of chips, has not yet mastered the difficult high-volume manufacturing process. Intel, which had aggressively promoted the new chips, is now telling customers to rely on hard disks and conventional memory until the new chips can ship. The setback is unlikely to have much affect on Intel's financial results, which are being driven by booming sales of its 486 microprocessors. Advanced Micro Devices, a distant second to Intel in the flash memory market, is picking up customers as a result of the delay.

Computer makers are hurrying to create portables incorporating cellular modems
Article Abstract:
Computer manufacturers are seeking to take advantage of the current cellular communications boom by developing portable computers with built-in cellular modems. Toshiba Corp is already planning to introduce one such product in Jun 1991, with many manufacturers planning releases for the fall. The new products are seen as the first step towards the creation of a 'personal communicator' product that would fit inside a coat pocket and be capable of sending and receiving data over a cellular network. It is anticipated that the new technology would eventually be capable of automatically taking phone messages, notifying the user of upcoming meetings, updating simple programs and files, and displaying information on tiny liquid crystal screens.
