Intel profit exceeds analysts' estimates: earnings third quarter totaled $1.56 billion, driven by chip demand
Article Abstract:
Santa Clara, CA-based Intel Corp.'s third quarter earnings exceeded Wall Street analysts' expectations as a result of strong chip demand. The company reported net income of $1.56 billion for the period ending Sept. 26, 1998. The numbers constitute a dramatic turn-around for Intel. The company had endured disappointing results previously when personal-computer makers cut back on chip orders. Intel has found ways to produce chips more cheaply to counteract any downturn in demand.

Chip makers enter slump; sales fall 13%
Article Abstract:
Semiconductor manufacturers all over the world are experiencing a slump in sales as a result of the Asian economic crisis, a production capacity glut, and pricing pressures created by cheap personal computers. Almost every chip maker and equipment supplier category has been hurt by the slump. In May 1998, chip sales around the world fell almost 13% compared to the same period in 1997. It is the lowest monthly sales figure reported since February 1995.
