Intel quickens pace of designing chips; future generation is due a year early
Article Abstract:
Intel Corp is planning to introduce a new microprocessor code named P-6 that is the future-generation chip originally slated for shipment in late 1994. Intel is already discussing contracts with several computer manufacturers who plan to use the chip by late 1993. The P-6 is expected to be renamed the 686 and will follow the introduction of the 586 which is scheduled for release in mid-1992. The fast pace of product development is the result of a $1.6 billion investment in research and development. The company's new products will probably cause the older chips to come down in price. Intel is already working on the P-7, a next-generation chip designed to follow the P-6. Intel hopes that its large financial investments will pay off as competitors cannot keep up with the technological pace. The P-6 will also utilize reduced-instruction-set-computing (RISC) technology. Some analysts believe that Intel's P-5 needs more time to penetrate the market before the P-6 is released.

U.S. Microchip makers suspect Japan of dumping, but some see lack of proof
Article Abstract:
US chip makers claim that some Japanese companies may be selling dynamic random-access memories (DRAMs) illegally at below cost, an accusation that may take attention away from more important foreign trade issues. The US chip manufacturers are presenting a list of complaints to Washington, which they hope to use to convince lawmakers to take more action on international trade. Chief Executive Officer of Micron Technology Inc Joseph Parkinson may present proof of the allegations in the form of receipts that show chips sold at below cost. Some industry analysts believe that there is not enough proof to legally indict any Japanese companies. The chip 'dumping' may carry over to other industries as well.
