Intel to acquire Xircom for $748 million, gaining products for corporate networks

In a $25-a-share, $748 million, offer, Intel agreed to buy out Xircom in a bid to gain access to the corporate data communications market. Xircom's add-in cards allow mobile computing devices to connect with corporate networks. Xircom also announced lower than expected earnings for the quarter. The purchase price represents a 38% premium over the current $18-a-share price for Xircom.

Intel is banking on Pentium 4 ads to revive sales

Intel Corp. is set to launch a $300 ad campaign for its Pentium 4 microprocessor. The ads were created by Messner Vetere Berger McNamee Schmetterer/EuroRSCG, and will feature the Blue Man Group, the performance-art group wearing blue face paint, that appeared in Intel's ads for the Pentium 3.

Agilent reports a hefty loss, plans job cuts
Article Abstract:
Agilent Technologies, a maker of test and measuring equipment, reported a third quarter loss of $219 million, or 48 cents a share. In response, the company announced 4,000 jobs cuts, accounting for 9% of its work force. The drop in income was caused by a sharp falloff in sales and orders. Agilent's shares fell 9% to $23.75 in after hours trading.
