New painkiller is withdrawn after 4 deaths
Article Abstract:
The FDA withdraws Duract, a prescription painkiller manufactured by Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories, following 4 deaths of patients due to liver failure. The drug's withdrawal from pharmacies undermines the agency's new policy of speeding up drug approvals. It is the third instance in nine months of the agency withdrawing a newly approved medicine for safety reasons compared to 6 withdrawals over the past decade. The fast-track policy resulted from Congressional pressure and financial support from the pharmaceutical industry. Duract has been prescribed to 2.5 million people in the last 11 months.

Legal squabbles in path of Internet
Article Abstract:
The online services industry is beginning to encounter the legal issues facing the proliferation of intellectual property over the Internet. Text, images, audio, and video will all probably be encrypted and sold. New areas open to legal scrutiny are patents involving electronic commerce business processes and related software, and how that affects the adoption of industry standards. An example is barnesandnoble.com's disputing Amazon.com's claim that one-click purchasing is a proprietary technology.
