Israeli court overturns Nazi guard's death sentence

The Israel Supreme Court reversed the conviction of Demjanjuk on Jul 29, 1993, after evidence from Soviet files seemed to indicate that Demjanjuk was not the Nazi guard known as 'Ivan the Terrible.' Demjanjuk had been sentenced to death for World War II war crimes in 1988.

'Ivan' war-crimes appeal hearing ends
Article Abstract:
The Israel Supreme Court hearing of John Demjanjuk's appeal of his conviction of war crimes ended in June 1992. A final ruling will be announced later in the summer. A federal court reopened Demjanjuk's extradition case in the US.
