Unemployment in Australia was 7% in Apr 2001, with the number of job ads having fallen by 34.3% in the past year. Many companies are restructuring or undertaking mergers and acquisitions, scaling down their workforces in the process. However, more flexible employment patterns will emerge, and some observers believe that a period of falling unemployment is about to start.
