Jobless rate fell to 5.5% in February

The unemployment rate fell to 5.5% in Feb 1996, down from 5.8% in Jan 1996, in part because 705,000 nonfarm jobs had been created, to increase the national total to 117.87 million. The manufacturing industry created 26,000 jobs in Feb 1996. Analysts do not expect the growth to continue.

The Labor Dept reported that the seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate rose from 5.4% in Dec 1994, to 5.7% in Jan 1995, indicating the economy is starting to slow. Close to 134,000 jobs were created in Jan 1995, the smallest amount since Jan 1994.

The Labor Dept reported that the seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 5.7% in Jan 1995, to 5.4% in Feb 1995. It also reported that the number of nonfarm jobs created rose from 176,000 in Jan 1995 to 318,000 in Feb 1995.
