Digital music standard raises host of questions
Article Abstract:
The music industry's Secure Digital Music Initiative standard would encrypt music stored in a digital format. This means that users could download a copy over the Internet, make one copy for their own use, and play it back only on devices designed to recognize a 'digital watermark.' Purveyors and users of the current 'open' standard wonder what will happen to the equipment and music they've invested in. Also, some musicians not under contract to the music industry release music over the Internet for free intentionally. New equipment may not play this 'free' music.
