King World agrees to pay $150 million in 'Oprah' deal
Article Abstract:
King World Productions Inc. has extended its deal to distribute "The Oprah Winfrey Show" through 2002, two years beyond the current expiration date. But the renewal has come at a cost. Faced with the prospect of competitors picking up distribution of "Oprah," the TV syndicator had to cut its distribution fee nearly 50%, which will result in the increased payments to Oprah Winfrey's production company and lower profits for King World. Under the new distribution agreement, King World will pay Ms. Winfrey's Chicago-based Harpo Productions Inc. $150 million over the next two years as an "advance" on distributing the show from 2000 to 2002. King World will pay Harpo $75 million within the next 30 days for the rights to distribute the show in the 2000-2001 period, and another $75 million by June 1, 2000 for the rights to distribute the show in the 2001-2002 period.

Ads to promote using transcripts for jobs
Article Abstract:
The Advertising Council is distributing a public service ad asking employers to ask teen job applicants to submit their high school transcripts. The desired message is that if employers care about applicants' academic performance and attendance record, perhaps students will be motivated to perform their best. Groups such as the Equal Employment Advisory Council warn employers that improper use of transcripts could put them at risk for discriminating against some particular protected group. Leo Burnett Co. is the agency that created the ad.
