Juice maker pleads guilty and pays $1.5 million in fatal poisoning case
Article Abstract:
Odwalla Inc., which is based in Half Moon Bay, Calif., has agreed to pay a $1.5 million fine after pleading guilty to 16 counts related to its sale of tainted apple juice. The case stems from the death of a baby girl and illness of 70 other people who drank the contaminated apple juice in 1996. The settlement, which is the largest criminal penalty in a food poisoning case, includes a $250,000 grant to non-profit food safety organizations and research centers. Odwalla, which will probably be sentenced to 5 years probation, already has settled more than a dozen private lawsuits filed after the juice contamination outbreak.
