Hewlett to buy 5% of Convex Computer in accord that also calls for chip use
Article Abstract:
HP is buying five percent of Convex Computer Corp as part of a larger agreement between the two companies. Convex has agreed to use HP's integrated circuits in future supercomputers. HP will purchase 1.2 million of Convex's 23 million shares and is considering the purchase of additional shares in the future. The cooperative agreement helps both companies, and HP's reduced-instruction-set-computing chips now have guaranteed further market share. Hitachi had already agreed to use HP chips, but Convex is promising to use the chips in their massively parallel supercomputers. HP has discussed acquiring a maximum stake of 25 percent of Convex in the future. HP's chips will compete against chips offered by Sun Microsystems and DEC.

Readin', writin' & multimedia: slowly, teachers are turning to a new tool
Article Abstract:
Multimedia technology, which uses music recordings, video clips, computer graphics, text and recorded speeches, is makings its way into the classroom. Industry observers note that the demand for multimedia is increasing, despite the cost of equipment and lack of standards in the industry. Those in favor of the technology note that it prepares students for a technologically based society and helps teachers simplify their research for lessons. Most analysts agree that the computer industry must set up some standards if it expects the technology to really take off; an attitude of skepticism among teachers is another issue that needs to be addressed.
