LSI Logic's cost-cutting efforts produce a payoff: first profit in three quarters follows strong chip sales, leaner strategy
Article Abstract:
LSI Logic Corp reports net income of $6.7 million, or 15 cents per share, on revenue of $161 million for 4th qtr FY 1992. It was the semiconductor firm's first profit since 4th qtr 1991, when the company posted net income of $939,000, or 2 cents per share, on revenue of $164.2 million. The company's gross margins rose from 33.8 percent to 36.6 percent over the course of the year. Awash for years in overcapacity, LSI took a $102 million charge in 1992 to cut workers, close factories and dump low-profit products. LSI is now well-positioned in the growing market for custom-made chips called application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs).

Advanced Micro again reports quarterly loss
Article Abstract:
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) posts its third consecutive loss, reporting a net loss of $43 million (55 cents a share) for the 4th qtr. In the same period a year earlier, AMD earned $11.8 million (11 cents a share). Revenue fell 6.8 percent, to $265.9 million, from $285.3 million. AMD's loss reflects both a chip-industry slowdown and unprofitable product lines. Analysts say the loss was expected. They think AMD will do better in 1991. For 1990, AMD reports a net loss of $53.6 million (78 cents a share), which compares with a $46.1 million profit (44 cents a share) in 1989.
