In the dark
Article Abstract:
No one really knows how big the electronic marketplace truly is due to the extreme decentralization and anonymity of the Internet and the Web. In contrast, firms in the physical marketplace readily know how many clients they have. Approximately 10 million servers host Internet traffic, but there is no way to know how much traffic. Further, there is no solid number about the amount of Web servers that exist. Firms that have Web pages can determine how many files are clicked on by Web surfers, but there still is no way to count visitors or determine if visitors are repeat customers unless surfers voluntarily reveal this data. Some experts estimate that there will be a billion Internet users by the end of the 20th Century, but others who have made actual measurement attempts reveal that there are around 9.5 million Internet users in the US as of 1996.

Who uses the Internet?
Article Abstract:
The typical Web user is still a young male who is more educated and wealthier than the average person, but Web use is beginning to change. Computer use is increasing in the home, leading to Web use by all members of the family. Almost two-thirds of Web users are men, but in the home, women are just about as likely to use computers as men. Businesses that view the Web as a marketing medium are encouraged by this trend. Increased use of the Web is leading to more commercial services offered online. The average household income of the typical online user is $48,200, above the average $44,400 of the general population. While Internet usage is increasing, the average amount of time spent online is decreasing. About 80% of Internet users now spend four hours or less online each month.
